2018 February Security Updates Landed on Galaxy S7 and S7 edge

Yet the monthly Android security updates has once again making it rounds on Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge devices. This time the updates around here are the following updates the bumps-up the Android security patch level to February 1, 2018.

However, Samsung  hasn't fully rolled out the said updates for this month in the United States. While there are several specific carriers and countries has gotten the monthly security update treatment, but some devices hasn't received it yet.


Rogers and Telus Galaxy S7 and S7 edge Receiving Android 7.0 Nougat Updates

Following the roll out the official Android 7.0 Nougat updates Galaxy S7 and S7 edge in Canada earlier last week.  But the roll out only happened on Bell, Eastlink, and Free Mobile  customers. This time around Rogers, Telus, Fido,  Koodo  and among other carriers devices are also started getting the same treatment.

Similar to Bell's released, Roger and Telus Galaxy S7 G930W8 bumped to version GG930W8VLU2BQB6.  While the Galaxy S7 edge on the other hand, also received an update to version G935W8VLU2BQB6.

Canada's Galaxy S7 and S7 edge Owners Receiving Android 7.0 Nougat Updates

Canadian owners of the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge has finally started receiving their Android 7.0 Nougat updates.  The said Nougat updates  is recently hitting Bell customers, while other major Canadian carriers will follow shortly in just a couple of days.  The Galaxy S7 received the firmware version G930W8VLU2BQB6. While the Galaxy S7 edge has also gotten the firmware version G935W8VLU2BQB6.

This update is now available for Bell, Eastlink, Free Mobile, Sasktel, and Virgin Mobile. Rogers, Telus, and Fido hasn't showed up yet, but might be delayed for a while for some reasons.

Rogers, Telus, Bell and Unlocked Galaxy S7 and S7 edge Receives September Android Security Patch Updates to version G930W8VLU2API1 & G935W8VLU2API1

All of the major Canadian carriers Galaxy S7 and S7 edge has started receiving the September Android Security patch update. This update will bump up the Canada's Galaxy S7 Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow OS to build version G930W8VLU2API1. Whilst the Galaxy S7 edge will also move up to build version G935W8VLU2API1.

The update is recently hitting through Rogers, Telus, Bell, Koodo, Fido, Wind, and the unlocked Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge. But all of Canada's  major carrier, including its sub-carriers might as well follow very soon.

In addition, the September Android Security Patch package address 66 Google patches along with 9 Samsung vulnerabilities and exposures. These patches were classified into its severity, some is referred to as critical issues, while the rest are at high and medium security vulnerabilities. The said security vulnerabilities can be executed by means of remote code access such as email, web browsing, and processing multi-media files. However, there are no any incident of exploitation being reported from active customers to the said Android security vulnerabilities, according to Android security bulletin.


How to update the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge via Over-The-Air:


  • Ensure your battery is fully charged before starting the software update. This is a must and very important part to get rid of some issues if ever the software update being interrupted due to a power failure.

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Menu Key > Settings > About phone > Software updates > Check for Updates.
  2. If your device finds a new software update, tap Download now. When complete, a screen will appear advising you that the new version of software is ready to be installed. Tap Install update.
  3. The device will power down and power back on. A screen will appear stating that the installation has been completed. Tap OK.
  4. You’ve successfully updated your software.

How to Update the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge Thru Smart Switch?


The second method is a firmware update through Samsung Smart Switch for PC. You may head over to your  local Samsung support page from where you can download the Smart Switch from there, and install it in your PC or Mac computer. Once you installed the Smart Switch, all you need is connect your Samsung Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge into your PC using the USB data cable, then simply run and follow Smart Switch on-screen’s software update instruction.

For those who have a rooted Galaxy S7 or S7 edge, you folks might need to download the stock firmware itself – Galaxy S7 Stock Firmware and Galaxy S7 edge Stock Firmware as you may no longer get the Over The air update as long as your device has been rooted or modified .  This process will completely unroot and remove any modification in your Galaxy S7 and S7 edge phone and restores it back to its official or factory default firmware.

Telus, Bell, Rogers Galaxy S7 and S7 edge Receives Improved Wi-FiCalling and July Security Patch Update (VLU1APG1)

All major and minor Canadian carriers Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge has started receiving the Android Security patch update for July.  The update also includes the Wi-Fi calling improvements, and resolves several bug fixes. Noting that there were some downside have been found in April's released. The previous update had been reportedly causing battery draining problem. So hope's this update would come out flawlessly and without any glitches.

Telus was the first carrier to released the said update, then followed by Rogers, Bell, and the rest of Canadian carriers, including Wind, Koodo, Fido, Videotron, Eastlink, and Virgin-Mobile to their own Galaxy S7 and S7 edge lineup. The Factory unlocked version of Canada's Galaxy S7 and S7 edge also get the same treatment. The update weighs at approximately 260MB in size and came out as build version MMB29M.G930W8VLU1APG1 for the Galaxy S7 and MMB29M.G935W8VLU1APG1 for the Galaxy S7 edge devices.
